With the current economic situation many families are cutting back on spending. This doesn't mean fun has to end! Suggestions are provided for family fun on a budget.
People across the country are keenly aware of the impending economic situation and realize reality involves years before economic recovery will occur. Most people are cutting back for fear of the weak economy and fear of their own personal financial decline. This means it is time to stop spending, but it doesn’t mean all the fun has to end. Follow these suggestions for family fun on a budget and find yourself having more fun than you've had in a long time. Inexpensive Indoor ActivitesNo matter where you live, the weather may dictate indoor activities for fun. Staying home isn't your only option. Contact your local YMCA and find out about specific opportunities available for families in your community. Many YMCA's have family nights, sporting events, free swim, game nights, and even affordable child care. Many local museums and galleries offer a day during the week that is discounted or they may provide discounts on season passes for those who live nearby. Contact the American Association of Museums and see what is available. Take advantage of discounts and educate your family about history, art, and culture. Cooking together as a family is an excellent option for fun. Try different cuisines and have each person in the family have a role in building the meal. The little ones can participate with simple roles, such as stirring, putting cheese on top, etc. Don't forget about the classic board and card games. As we all know, there are games for every age - from "Go Fish" to "Monopoly" -and the whole family can get involved in an activity that may be more stimulating than watching t.v. Inexpensive Outdoor ActivitiesThere are many different activities available outside that are both fun and inexpensive. During the winter, stop thinking of snow as a pain in the neck and begin to use it to your advantage! Take the kids out to a nearby hill and go sledding. Not only will you all be howling with laughter, but you’ll get some exercise climbing those hills. Build snow forts and have a competition to see who makes the best fort. End the day with cocoa by the fire and talk about snow sculptures or snow fights you will experience tomorrow. When snow isn't available, show your children local hiking trails and botanical gardens and learn about native flowers, plants, and animals. Teach your children about your environment. Plant flowers and vegetables in your yard or at a local garden. If a yard or local garden isn’t available, consider leaving seeds of native plants along hiking trails to add more beauty to your own community. Picnics are fun all through the year. Take the family to a local beach or park and spend the day snacking on healthy foods. Notice the seasons and celebrate them with foods that are in season. While there, play some old fashioned games such as capture the flag, touch football, simon says, etc. Vacation on a BudgetVacations aren't easy when money isn't available, but remember they don't have to be expensive! Jordan E. Goodman, an expert on personal finance, has an excellent website that provides clear guidance about how to be smart with money and how to find inexpensive vacations. Do some research and see what options might be available for your family. Remember, spending time together is more fun than any monetary object will ever be. Get out there and have fun without breaking the bank and create fond memories you will never forget.
