It's possible to create significant Christmas memories that cost little or nothing. Make Christmas memorable without blowing the family budget.

It’s easy to get caught up in the Christmas rush and the pressure to buy more and more things in an attempt to make the holiday special. The good news is, it is possible to make the best Christmas memories without breaking the bank.

When planning Christmas, consider the following inexpensive ways to make this Christmas the most memorable one yet.

Make Homemade Christmas Cards

Get together as a family and create unique, homemade Christmas cards. The Christmas cards can be plain or fancy and can be made by all members of the family regardless of age or artistic ability.

The easiest way to create Christmas cards is to set out various supplies such as the following:

  • Construction paper
  • Cardstock
  • Scissors with fancy edges
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Markers and crayons
  • Rubber stamping supplies
  • Old magazines that can be cut up
  • Christmas cards received in years past that are not particularly sentimental

Allow each person to make cards in the way that he deems appropriate, without a lot of “coaching.” The focus needs to be on family fun and togetherness, not perfection.

This is an activity that may take more than one day, so if possible, put all the supplies on an out of the way table and leave everything out.

Once the Christmas cards are completed, call ahead and find a nursing home where they can be distributed. Some of the residents in nursing homes receive few if any visitors and may not receive any Christmas cards. Keep in mind that dressing up in Christmas attire or Sunday best is often appreciated by the elderly.

Take a Lot of Christmas Photos

It’s great to dress the family up and head to the neighborhood photographer for a family photo, but a professional family photo can cost an arm and a leg. The good news is that the most memorable photos are often candid shots taken by family members.

The best thing is, except for the cost of the camera itself, numerous digital photos can be taken without spending a dime. The photos can be uploaded to social networking sites like Facebook, added to free blogs and shared in other ways such as email. The best photos can be printed on photo paper and framed if desired.

Create a Family Christmas Scrapbook or Journal

Family scrapbooks and journals are an excellent way to preserve family memories. The duty for creating scrapbooks generally falls on Mom, but in order to create the absolute best family memories, get as many people as possible involved in creating the scrapbook or journal.

While it is true that a family scrapbook that truly involves the family, including children will not be as perfect as one made by a talented scrapbook enthusiast, memories, not perfection, should be the focus of this particular project.

Family Christmas scrapbooks or journals can include the following items and more:

  • Programs from plays and other Christmas Events
  • Poetry and thoughts written by family members
  • Family photos
  • The menu and recipes served at holiday meals and parties
  • Bits of favorite Christmas wrapping paper

Scrapbooks and journals can be picked up at local hobby or office supply stores, or even at stores such as Archiver’s that specialize in scrapbooking supplies.

Making homemade Christmas cards and distributing them to the elderly, taking a lot of digital photos at family gatherings, and creating scrapbooks and journals are just a few inexpensive ways to ensure that Christmas memories last generations.
